Valencia Vibes: Our Top Spots to Work and Wander

Digital nomads, winter sunshine seekers, you over there in need of a break. Fancy a change of scenery to shake up your working week?

We’ve put in the hours, completed the research and concluded that a November getaway is the perfect way to boost productivity. It’s a nothing-kind-of month after all (nobody in their right mind is feeling festive just yet). So Valencia, with its burgeoning work-friendly café scene and arts and science credentials, was an excellent idea.

Contented’s Client Services lead Tanya was there last week. Given that we like to shout about a flexible, work-from-anywhere approach to life, here are a few spots that offer the good vibes and delicious fuel required to keep you going until that first aigua de Valencia of the evening…

One not to miss is Rito, a cosy yet minimalist space that oozes chilled, creative energy. The laid-back atmosphere and friendly staff make this corner of Carrer de Borriana perfect for focusing. Excellent coffee kept us fuelled and universal truths adorn the walls (“Muchas culturas en une taza de café”). Hours fly by in a flash here.

The City of Arts and Sciences sits at one end of the stunning Turia Gardens; its striking interiors and architecture bring a healthy dose of futuristic inspiration. Go for a run (or cycle, or amble) within this beautiful green space, and then set up your outdoor office at one of the myriad cafés and snack bars en route.

A beach day ? It’d be rude not to. The soothing sound of waves and a warm sea breeze. The freshest seafood and hours of sunlight (no 5pm darkness here) will boost your mood and productivity, and the laid-back beach vibe helps you stay calm and focused. Catch up on emails en terraza just down the road and get the mandarina sorbet from Gelática. The best in the city, some might say.

Okay, admittedly this one’s a lunch break entry. But how about a culinary-inspired “work” session at the Central Market? Invigorating market energy – and delightful cones of charcuterie and olives – will keep you going all afternoon.

End your day at El Cafetín. It’s classic Valencian and right in the heart of the old town. Let live piano music make for a memorable work session, while super chilled waiters bring you potato chips – and expats compare notes on life in the birth place of paella!

If your role allows for it, chances are you’ll want to combine productivity with pleasure through your working week. Valencia is intimate enough to explore on foot, and super child-friendly too (Tanya visited all these places with her 14-month- old in tow). So, kids or no kids, pack your laptop and book your flight. Who knows, you might just find your new favourite workspace. Salud!
