10 things brands should expect from their copywriter
(Yes, you should expect more than words).

Hiring a copywriter is not the same as ordering a coffee. You don’t order, pay and hope it hits the spot. Good copy is collaborative, opinionated and occasionally uncomfortable. At least, that’s where the best results come from.
Here are ten things brands should expect from their copywriter. If you’re not getting most of these, it might be time to evaluate.
1. A grown-up relationship with AI.
AI is cool. Useful. Clever. A good copywriter knows how to use it without letting it dull your brand communications. That means excellent prompting, clear judgement and knowing when to step away. AI is a fantastic tool, not the voice of your business.
2. Responsiveness.
No ghosting. No vanishing acts. No radio silence mid-project. You should expect clear replies, realistic turnaround times and someone who treats your project like it matters.
3. Flexibility, not flakiness.
Briefs change. Priorities move. Launch dates shift. A professional copywriter can adapt without drama and with agility, while still protecting the quality of the work.
4. The confidence to push back.
If everything is always “fine”, something is wrong. A good copywriter will challenge ideas respectfully, test assumptions and say no when needed. A little friction can bring a lot of value.
5. The long and the short of it.
One blog post shouldn’t live and die as such. Strong copywriters think in ecosystems. Long-form content should naturally lead to social posts, emails and snippets that actually get used.
6. Genuine interest, not box-ticking.
Care shows. Research shows. Curiosity shows. If your copywriter is not asking questions or digging into the details, the work will always feel a bit hollow.
7. Proper time, not rushed miracles.
Excellent copy needs space to breathe. To sink in. To evolve. You should expect your copywriter to embrace that process and you should expect to do the same. Speed is not the same as quality.
8. Social media awareness, plus restraint
Yes, they should know the hooks, formats and trends across platforms. And yes, they should also know when not to use them. Not every brand needs to jump on every bandwagon.
9. Authenticity over polish
Perhaps a controversial one, this. But perfect is boring. Humans are not. Your copywriter should help you sound clear, confident and real, not like you’ve drunk the corporate Koolaid.
10. An eagle eye for what makes you different
Most people can write competent copy. The real skill is spotting your USPs and pulling them forward in a sea of sameness. That takes close attention, sound judgement and experience.
Good copywriting is not just about words. It is about thinking, care and collaboration. Expect that level of work, and you are far more likely to produce content that the world really wants to see.
